Someone Please Tell Amazon That Catalogs Are Dead

What a pairing! The Sharper Image, still going since 1977, when Happy Days dominated the ratings. And… Amazon’s holiday toy catalog.

Yes, that Amazon.

Their first catalog was last year. Being the data-driven company they are, clearly the catalogs worked well enough to warrant doing them again. Imagine that: paper catalogs being used in our mobile-first, digital-native, everything-but-digital-is-dead world.

First Amazon started advertising on linear TV. Now they’re printing actual paper catalogs and mailing them through snail mail. Who knows what they’ll do next: RADIO? (Oops — they already got onto radio in 2017.) Print? Newspapers??

If there are morals to this story:

  1. Nothing is ever dead. It’s just different.

  2. Reach is reach, whatever the medium. And the more people you reach, the more you grow.
